Last First Draft was designed to split the creative portion of writing (the rough first draft/idea flow), from the logical portion (fixing spelling/grammar errors, and editing in general). The first few steps focus on getting any and all ideas on the page, and letting your creativity flow. Using the Placeholders feature, you can power through sections of your writing without getting stuck trying to get dialogue right, or nail down a setting description. The later steps let you go back and do the editing, but now with a full (very) rough draft under your belt. This includes revisiting the placeholders you left for yourself, and passes for finally reckoning with spelling and grammar.
The app comes with a set of placeholders you can utilize while drafting — /dia for dialogue, /det for details, /scene for scenery, etc. They let you keep momentum in the rough draft, then the editing passes step you back through each one to fill it in properly. You can also customize the placeholders, or add as many new ones as you need.
Of course — you can print or download your drafts and notes at any stage. Export to .docx (editable), .pdf (print & share), or .txt (plain text). You can also print straight from the toolbar with formatting intact.
You can create as many drafts as you want. To keep the editor fast there are generous caps: unlimited drafts, up to 450,000 words per draft; up to 100 notes, and 100,000 words per note.
There's one plan that includes everything. It can be paid monthly ($13) or yearly ($120), with a discount for paying yearly that equates to 2.7 months free. Every subscription starts with a 14-day free trial, so you can try the whole app before you pay. See the Pricing page
Yes. Log in and go to the Account tab, and scroll to Manage subscription. There's no cancellation fee, and you don't need to contact us first. You keep full access through the end of the period you've already paid for, and canceling during the free trial means you're never charged.
Nothing is deleted. If you cancel, nothing changes until the period you've paid for runs out; after that your account goes read-only for 90 days, so you can still open, read, print, and download every draft and note (you just can't edit). A failed payment switches you to read-only mode until the payment goes through. Once the 90 days are up your drafts are no longer viewable, but they're still stored; you can sign in to manage your account, and resubscribing at any point restores full editing with all of your work intact.
Yes. Your drafts and notes are private to your account — nobody else can see them, and your writing will never be exposed to scraping/training for AI models. Everything saves continuously to your account and is backed up daily, with backups kept for 30 days.
You can delete your account anytime from Account → Delete account. This cancels your subscription, and locks the app right away; everything is permanently deleted after 30 days. While it's pending you can still stop the deletion and get your drafts and notes back — though your subscription stays cancelled, so you'd need to resubscribe to start editing again. Download or print anything you want to keep before you confirm.
Last First Draft runs in the browser, so you need an internet connection to write. If you drop offline mid-session, the editor switches to read-only so nothing you've written is lost or overwritten. Once you reconnect you can pick up where you left off.
Start with the User Guide — it walks through every part of the app, and includes many screenshots and videos. If it doesn't cover your question, use the Contact us page and we'll get back to you within 1–2 business days. Once you're signed in, the same guide is available from the Dashboard, with a Get Help form at the bottom.
